Walter Chen

Walter’s versatility is admiring. As an experienced innovator and thinker, he keeps on experimenting different dimensions of the contemporary jewelry.

He shapes his identity as artist by creating unique pieces that are born from his personal interpretation of the different cycles and metamorphosis processes in nature and the displacement of his culture of origin. He therefore translates organic and ductile materials connotated with Orientalism (silk, paper, bamboo) into pieces of contemporary jewelry. Moreover, for some creations he uses the chiselling technique which gives his art an assertive character.

Those of us who know Walter Chen and have had the priviledge to see and appreciate his jewelry artwork can confirm that he is a well rounded artist with high intellectual capabilities as well as creative talent, passion and good taste for design. Moreover, he offers a distinctive discourse within the contemporary art panorama and valuable interpretations of the Oriental culture in constant dialogue with the Western one.

Walter Chen was born in Taiwan where he studied Industrial Fine Arts at the National Art Academy.

In 1997 he moved to Barcelona, where we followed the chasework course at the Escuela Massana. He then completed a Ciclo formativo of the Higher Degree in Artistic Jewelry. At this prestigious institution he also did the summer course La conservación del patrimonio: El espacio y tiempo. Eager to obtain deeper knowledge and transversality, he completed a Fine Arts degree at Universitat de Barcelona (minor in restoration) where he afterwards obtained the DEA (Diploma de Estudios Avanzados) in order to start his PhD in Fine Arts.

As thinker and artist of contemporary jewelry and active thinker and translator of culture, he has given several lecturers for Casa Asia, Museu Frederic Marès and Palau Robert en Barcelona, Escola d’Art i superior de Disseny de València, Escola d’Art de Menorca, Foment Vilanoví, Escola d’Arts i Oficis de la Diputació de Tarragona, Universidad Nacional de Arte and the Ming Tao University in Taiwan, Joya Barcelona, Galería dterra en Sant Cugat del Vallés (Barcelona), etc.

Moreover, he has participated and given many seminars and worshops on calligraphy and paper applied to art in the Escola Municipal d’Art Arsenal (Vilafranca del Penedés), la Universidad Nacional de Arte de Taiwán, Escola d’Art i Disseny Berguedà, Palau Robert in Barcelona, etc.

He obtained first prizes at different contests such as ENJOIA’T and was finalist of Eurobijoux & Accesories de Menorca…
